Part 1: Diagnosis & Assessment |
|
Diagnosis and assessment is the most IMPORTANT part of the Chinese Herbal Treatment, in Chinese medicine as well as in western medicine. As the Chinese Medical System is evolved and developed upon the signs and symptoms identification of the patient for analysis, diagnosis and assessment. This means that if the relevant health information has not been gathered thoroughly or correctly, it can alter the herbs prescribed for that particular health condition and affect the effectiveness of the treatment. Thus, it is important that the patient provide thorough and truthful health data in order to gain the maximal health benefits from the treatment. In the Diagnosis & Assessment, all patients health information will be examined, assessed and analysed from western medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as integrated Chinese Medicine perspectives. Extensive medical knowledge, clinical experiences and Traditional Chinese medical theories are employed in the patient health assessment, analysing detail signs and symptoms and a "wholistic" treatment strategy is used in Chinese herbal treatment treating the health problem eg, stress and anxiety rather than one specific symptoms eg. headache caused by stress. Due to the overwhelming inquiry on our Chinese Herbal Treatment service as well as the diverse complexities and varieties of the health conditions we have encountered, for the best interest of our patients and their financial affordability, diagnosis and health assessment is now been classified into 3 categories: brief, standard and extensive
Brief Diagnosis & Assessment This involves in gathering of key symptoms of a health condition. Severity: The health condition should be mild in severity and only occur occasionally. And the person should not be suffering from other health conditions. For example: Binge eating: the person only experience binge eating once a while (once a month), or before period and the habit is not too severe.
Standard Diagnosis & Assessment This involves in gathering of common signs and symptoms of a health condition. Severity: The health condition should be moderate in severity. And the person may be suffering from one or two other health conditions. For example: Binge eating: the person may experience binge eating when stressed or once a week. And he/she is also suffering from stress and anxiety
Extensive Diagnosis & Assessment This involves in gathering of extensive signs and symptoms of more than one related health conditions (eg, PMS, period pain and binge eating), diet and lifestyle information. Severity: The person's health condition is often severe and complex in nature. And he/she often suffers from three or more related health conditions. For example: Binge eating: the person experiences binge eating, food craving as well as uncontrolled appetite all the time. She is also feeling stressed and anxious and depressed. She has been having digestive problems for a while with symptoms such as bloating, acid reflex as well as sluggish bowel movement. She is also suffering from PMS and period pain.

Prognosis of the Health Conditions after the Chinese herbal treatment |
|
In simple to moderate health conditions, prognosis and effectiveness of an individualised Chinese herbal treatment for a person's health condition can be as effective upto 90% to 95% with minimal adverse effects experienced by the patient, if the diagnosis and assessment has been carried out correctly and appropriate herbal prescription and herbal treatment is given to the person. In complicated conditions involving multiple problems, eg anxiety, stress, pms, period pain as well as ibs, it is important to sort out orders and priorities. It is often difficult to have a herbal prescription which covers all aspects without inducing any adverse effect. Furthermore, the signs and symptoms often change and shift in severities after the initial treatment. Thus, in the follow up treatment, the current signs and symptoms and the health condition need to be carefully re-examined and assessed in order for the practitioner to prescribed an appropriate and updated herbal treatment for the CURRENT health condition.
On the other hand, if the Chinese herbal treatment taken by the person is no longer appropriate to the person's CURRENT health conditions, the person may be experiencing adverse signs and symptoms without gaining any health benefits or improvements.
An IRRELEVANT herbal treatment or any medication can do more harm than good to your health. For example, a person recovering from a major surgery is given a ginseng prescription to improve his physical stamina and boosting his immune system. He feels this prescription is great and continues taking it without consulting his practitioner for his current health condition. After 2 months, he started experiencing hot flashes, heat sensations and sore throat with constipation without realising that the ginseng prescription is no longer suitable for his current health condition. And these symptoms are caused by the ginseng prescription.
Thus, for any herbal prescriptions or herbal treatment, it is important that the treatment is update after a period of time (between 4-6 weeks) and the treatment you are taking is appropriate for your current health condition. |
|
Reordering & Follow Up treatment |
|
Reordering and follow up treatments would also involve a diagnosis & assessment process to ensure that the previous herbal prescription/ treatment is still suitable for the person's health condition. This is important because often, after the person's initial treatment, his/her health condition may have changed, improved or shifting focus. If the person continues to take the same herbal treatment which does not match his/her health condition and the current symptoms, he/she may experience some adverse or undesirable effects from the herbal treatment. For this reason, in the follow up treatment, the practitioner still needs to gather the person's current health information, re analyse and assess to provide a updated herbal prescription and treatment that is suitable and effective for the person's current health condition. The follow up treatment is often similar to the initial treatment with slight changes and adjustments in herbal ratio, and maybe adding and subtracting of one or two herbs.
